In George’s Marvellous medicine we hear about all the fantastical ways that recipes can be mixed and in The Twit’s we love how natural items can play fantastic pranks, so let’s combine that and help our children develop some self-belief along the way!
In the past, people believed plants and trees embodied such things. We explored folklore to pull together Tree And Leaf Magic based on this.
Start by talking to your class about what they wish they were more of. Do they wish they were braver? Stronger? More Confident? Everyone could use a little magic in their lives. You can even explore why people may have believed such things, is there anything about the tree that elicits that feeling? Once you have explored this, set the children free with a wee tub or envelope each.
Children then create their own magic spell of what they would like to be, this is open to them but can be encouraged through discussion.
Once the children have their spells you can either discuss it together, what they have added, how much and why or, you can share some of the recipes from George’s Marvellous Medicine and use this as a stimulus for writing. Can they write their own marvellous recipes?
Differentiation
This is differentiated in terms of what your talking and listening/ writing goals are for the class at the time of delivering the lesson.
