Do you know how long ago dinosaurs lived?
Dinosaurs became extinct around 65 million years ago, after living on earth for around 165 million years.
For most children though, these numbers are just too big and the time scale too vast to really think about. So we started off looking at in in steps.
Let’s go a walk!
Thinking of time as steps makes it a little easier and means you get to go a nice walk back in time.
Each step is roughly 100,00 years
1 step – humans start creating stone structured buildings and already wars, the Victorians, and most of the history we would recognise are behind us!
3 steps – homo sapians (us lot) appeared
50 steps – you could meet a mammoth
680 steps – look out for tyrannosaurus
730 steps – look out for a velociraptor
800 steps – have you spotted triceratops
910 steps – elasmosaurus is swimming around
1535 steps – look out for diplodocus
1630 steps – check the skies for pterodactyloid
1760 steps – Stegosaurus is now roaming earth
2085 steps – look out for megalosaurus
2300 steps – dinosaurs aren’t around yet
Younger Children
You may include less stops if they are struggling to recall the detail. Set this up as a magical walk through time to help them understand.
Older Children
Should understand the concept a little more and can take in more information.
